White Cane Day is a yearly national day of observance established by President Lyndon Johnson in 1964. The day is set aside to celebrate the many achievements of people who are blind and visually impaired, and their important symbol of independence, the white cane.
Over 150 blind and visually impaired people, as well as, many sighted volunteers will participate in this annual celebration beginning at 601 SW 8th Ave. and proceeding down 8th street and then back to Miami Lighthouse’s campus.
This is the one time of year we ask our grateful clients to give back to this remarkable place that many call their second home. Event sponsors include presenting sponsors Florida Blue, High Standard Home Care and Uber, along with McDonald’s, Starbucks, OrCam, Vispero, Ambutech, Lions for the Blind, TracFone and others.
Nicole Adderly
My name is Nicole Adderly and I am a participant in the Social Group and Health Activities (SGA) program at Miami Lighthouse for the Blind. I have been a client for over 20 years and I have been lucky enough to work with many of the instructors who have taught me mobility and technology skills which help me live independently. I would not be where I am today without Miami Lighthouse.
Being a part of the SGA program has helped me learn new skills and find interests in making crafts like pompoms made with yarn. The SGA staff has continued to help me throughout this pandemic by sending me art supplies so that I can work on my art projects from the comfort of my home which helps me stay happy and engaged. The staff has also provided me with meals and masks.
