White Cane Day is a yearly national day of observance established by President Lyndon Johnson in 1964. The day is set aside to celebrate the many achievements of people who are blind and visually impaired, and their important symbol of independence, the white cane.
Over 150 blind and visually impaired people, as well as, many sighted volunteers will participate in this annual celebration beginning at 601 SW 8th Ave. and proceeding down 8th street and then back to Miami Lighthouse’s campus.
This is the one time of year we ask our grateful clients to give back to this remarkable place that many call their second home. Event sponsors include presenting sponsors Florida Blue, High Standard Home Care and Uber, along with McDonald’s, Starbucks, OrCam, Vispero, Ambutech, Lions for the Blind, TracFone and others.
John Cauley
My name is John Cauley. I am 32 years old and lost my sight 9 years ago in an armed robbery. I was approached by 2 men who tried to steal my car and held a gun to my face. I was able to push the gun away but as the attackers ran I got shot twice, which resulted in my blindness. For a year after that I was very angry and depressed, but then found out about the Miami Lighthouse.
I started coming here in 2015 when I joined the Social Group & Health Activity Classes (SGA). My life path completely changed as I experimented and learned about art. I found it challenging, which inspired me and let me to conquer projects such as architectural models, jewelry, sculpture and painting.
Miami Lighthouse motivated me to continue to do things I used to do and to try different options that I might not have done if I had not come here. I am now more detailed in my work than before I lost my vision. I choose to walk by faith and not by sight and truly believe anything is possible. Like the beaming light from a lighthouse I will continue to shine!
