White Cane Day is a yearly national day of observance established by President Lyndon Johnson in 1964. The day is set aside to celebrate the many achievements of people who are blind and visually impaired, and their important symbol of independence, the white cane.
Over 150 blind and visually impaired people, as well as, many sighted volunteers will participate in this annual celebration beginning at 601 SW 8th Ave. and proceeding down 8th street and then back to Miami Lighthouse’s campus.
This is the one time of year we ask our grateful clients to give back to this remarkable place that many call their second home. Event sponsors include presenting sponsors Florida Blue, High Standard Home Care and Uber, along with McDonald’s, Starbucks, OrCam, Vispero, Ambutech, Lions for the Blind, TracFone and others.
My name is Hector Barilari and I was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1953 and immigrated to the USA in 1976 for a better quality of life. In 2016 I lost sight in both eyes due to a work accident. Fortunately, I was referred to the Miami Lighthouse and have been a member since 2018. This place has truly been my saving grace and most positive experience ever.
Losing my vision has been the hardest life changing event I’ve ever experienced but Miami Lighthouse has given me a new opportunity at life. I have learned Braille and also how to walk with a White Cane. I’ve been taught all the basic daily tasks once taken for granted such as using a computer; microwave; taking Public transportation and more. I’m grateful to Miami Lighthouse for changing my life and I’m blessed by their understanding.
