White Cane Day is a yearly national day of observance established by President Lyndon Johnson in 1964. The day is set aside to celebrate the many achievements of people who are blind and visually impaired, and their important symbol of independence, the white cane.
Over 150 blind and visually impaired people, as well as, many sighted volunteers will participate in this annual celebration beginning at 601 SW 8th Ave. and proceeding down 8th street and then back to Miami Lighthouse’s campus.
This is the one time of year we ask our grateful clients to give back to this remarkable place that many call their second home. Event sponsors include presenting sponsors Florida Blue, High Standard Home Care and Uber, along with McDonald’s, Starbucks, OrCam, Vispero, Ambutech, Lions for the Blind, TracFone and others.
Carmen Davis
My name is Carmen Davis and I was born in Cuba. When I was eleven years old I became blind, and my parents brought me to the USA. I always thank them and God for the great opportunities that have allowed me to live a normal life as a blind person. I went to public schools, learned English and Braille. At 17, I went to work at Hialeah Hospital, developing X-rays in their dark room. Later, I worked at Palmetto Hospital in their X-Ray department.
I married Wayne Davis who was legally blind and together as blind parents we raised our son, David. My son is a firefighter and paramedic, and he is a wonderful human being. I am very proud of him and of my accomplishments as a blind person.
In 2001 I started going to the Miami Lighthouse to take classes. It has been an amazing experience. I have learned to use a computer and have greatly benefited from all the programming. Here, we learn to use technology and techniques to be able to cook again, take care of our homes and to regain independence after going blind.
Miami Lighthouse is like my second home. It means so much to me and to so many of my friends who are also clients. We are like a big family that help each other and learn and laugh together. I would like to thank the directors along with the wonderful teachers and staff. Additionally, a big Thank You to the Lions Club for all the support they provide us.
