White Cane Day is a yearly national day of observance established by President Lyndon Johnson in 1964. The day is set aside to celebrate the many achievements of people who are blind and visually impaired, and their important symbol of independence, the white cane.
Over 150 blind and visually impaired people, as well as, many sighted volunteers will participate in this annual celebration beginning at 601 SW 8th Ave. and proceeding down 8th street and then back to Miami Lighthouse’s campus.
This is the one time of year we ask our grateful clients to give back to this remarkable place that many call their second home. Event sponsors include presenting sponsors Florida Blue, High Standard Home Care and Uber, along with McDonald’s, Starbucks, OrCam, Vispero, Ambutech, Lions for the Blind, TracFone and others.

My name is Beatriz Lastra, and I am delighted with the training I have received at Miami Lighthouse. I am visually impaired due to Diabetic Retinopathy, and fortunately, I found Miami Lighthouse and the help that I needed! When I came here for the first time, I was depressed, gloomy, and feeling lonely. I felt lost and did not know what to do with my life. As a professional in the medical field, I couldn’t retain my position as it was too hard to see the devices necessary to do my job. At this time, I am happy to announce that thanks to Diana, I got the job of my dreams. Plus, I am part of the chorus that represents Miami Lighthouse.
My life changed drastically. As soon as I arrived at Miami Lighthouse, my rehabilitation was successful due to my instructors, Mirna Garcia, Oseas, Barbarita, and Karima. I am grateful to work with Corina in my capacity as Mentor. I also want to thanks Mirla, John, Katia & Elizabeth. All of them are part of the staff. They all have been great with me. I have considered Miami Lighthouse my second home due to its compassionate staff, making me feel special and reaffirming that I am at the right place.
