MIAMI LIGHTHOUSE RESPONSE TO CORONAVIRUS

December 28th, 2020 – Miami Lighthouse for the Blind follows the Miami-Dade County Public Schools schedule and guidelines. In an effort to comply with health and safety procedures established to contain the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19), Miami Lighthouse for the Blind is in strict adherence to Social Distancing while on campus. Below is a status on programs at Miami Lighthouse:

  • Our Lighthouse Learning Center for Children™ follows Miami-Dade County Public Schools schedule and guidelines. Those students selected to the schoolhouse model will return onsite October 5th and remote instruction remains an option for those who choose to stay remote.
  • Our Blind Babies, early intervention and parent education, Parents as Teachers home visitation program, is taking place through a modified schedule with home visitation, virtual and telephonic instruction and support.
  • Music Saturday classes and MIDI classes continue to be held virtually.
  • Senior Group Activities classes are being conducted virtually until further notice.
  • Saturday programs and classes have been suspended and follows the Miami-Dade County Public Schools schedule and guidelines.
  • The Statewide Florida Heiken Children’s Vision Program staff continues to process applications and issue vouchers for eligible school children. Heiken plans to reactivate the mobile eye care units when schools reopen in the fall implementing COVID-19 Safety Protocols. Apply on the Heiken Portal or call 305-856-9830 with questions.
  • Independent Living Adult (ILAP), Older Blind (ILOB) and Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) have moved to virtual and telephonic instructions. For all clients in need of emotional support we are providing counseling.
  • The Miami Lighthouse Senior Group Activities program (SGA) for elderly clients and Independent Living Older Blind Services, participants 55 years and older, will be suspended until further notice. Decisions about reopening of the SGA program will be made on a weekly basis, based on the status of the epidemic.
