Miami Lighthouse’s annual signature event, our “SEE THE LIGHT” Luncheon, is one of our most important fundraising opportunities during the year. In past years, we’ve welcomed over 250 guests from our philanthropic family to a luncheon with music, entertainment and heartfelt remarks from program participants.
In keeping with the times of social distancing we are going virtual, so instead of 250 guests in a ballroom, we can now have unlimited attendees. Visit this web page on October 29th we will have a 30 minute program at 12:00pm featuring an exclusive performance by Latin superstar Willy Chirino and Chirino Sisters. We will also feature students in our Lighthouse Learning Center for Children™, Miami Lighthouse client Marin Baumer and a few more surprises!
My name is Marin Baumer and I am 23 years old. I graduated from The University of Miami in May 2019, and two weeks later I lost my sight in a random accident. An object flew through the front windshield of my boyfriend’s car, and hit me in the face while I was sitting in the passenger seat.
I lost my sight, and with that many skills to succeed in my day-to-day life. I became a student at Miami Lighthouse in July 2019, and just weeks after my accident I was already learning to use a cane, read braille, and use my phone. Miami Lighthouse guided me during the most difficult time in my life, and going there to take classes three times a week was something I looked forward to. I always went home knowing something I didn’t know the day before. There were so many tools and accommodations to learn about, and my instructors made it all possible.
Miami lighthouse not only became my resource for learning independent skills in my day-to-day life, but they also became my support system and family. Miami Lighthouse is an inclusive and educational environment, that stimulates learning and friendships. There were many people I was fortunate enough to meet, and the more people I talk to the better I understood what I would be going through. But most importantly that I wasn’t going to be going through it alone.
I owe my success to Miami Lighthouse.
